My favourite segment of Whose Line Is It Anyway ever... Hope this cheers up anyone who's depressed from exam mugging :p hahaha... You can only understand the "meow" bit if you've watched the whole show. I love the fact that Colin Mochrie is the only fella left singing at the end of the song.

Corner Flag Abuse

Lolll read this on Soccernet after Rooney's infamous punching of the corner flag after getting sent off at Craven Cottage last weekend:

An open letter to football's governing body dated March 21, 2009.

Dear FIFA/UEFA/FA/Premier League and whomever it may concern.
It has come to my attention that there are continued, unprovoked assaults occurring across football pitches every weekend and it is high time that something is done about it.
Long have the custodians of the corners stood, proud and erect. Harming no-one and diligently going about their business - yet they are the subject of constant abuse. I refer, of course, to the recent actions of Mr Wayne Rooney against Fulham where he callously beat a flag to the ground; while the likes of Tim Cahill continue to fly in the face of public decency with their assaults on the most upstanding members of the footballing world in the name of celebration!
Please make sure that in future such gross actions are punishable to the fullest extent of the law, lest the tradition of the corner flag be removed from the game altogether. Remember, without those brave flags, no-one would know where to take a corner from!
Sincerely,
Florence Agpole (National Organisation for the Protection of Corner Flags).

Spasticated beyond words. (Of course it's not a true letter -.-)

SUCKS

I'm reaching the point in studying where you try to test yourself what you mugged like last week, or a as much as up to a few days ago, and you only can recall bits and pieces of what you mugged.

It SUCKS I tell you, it really freaking sucks.

I've had it up to HERE already with this incessant mugging, memorizing loads of shit and trying to puke it all out in the examination in a desperate bid to pass. For the WHOLE of Year 2 it's been like this.

I don't remember studying being so difficult. I remember back in JC, I could mug stuff and actually REMEMBER what I mugged for weeks or months later. Why is now so different??? And it's not freaking helping that it seems like whatever I mugged for A levels is multiplied by 100, it's not so easy to "run through" everything again lorh.

And I got no one to rant to, no one to complain to, no one who can see this from a different perspective. If I tell my mom, she'll say "So many lesser people have done it before you and passed, so you will definitely be able to", and I can't perfectly well tell her that I feel SO MUCH DAMN LESSER than all those people when I cannot recall stuff that I SHOULD. I cannot tell my med friends cos they'd complain back to me and it'd become a competition of how much your life sucks cos of this mugging. I can't tell my best friends cos they'd just tell me not to waste time and go back to mugging. OMG.

I hate this kind of life. Hopefully this suffering pays off in the end, and I don't have to go for pass/fail VIVAs, or supps.

Damn it.

Glass Of Water

Probably my new favourite Coldplay song :)

"Glass Of Water" by Coldplay

Scared of losing all the time
He wrote it in a letter
He was a friend of mine

He heard you could see your future
Inside a glass of water
The ripples and the lines
And he asked
Would I see heaven in mine?

That is just the way it was
Nothing could be better
And nothing ever was

Oh they say you can see your future
Inside a glass of water
The riddles and the rhymes
Will I see heaven in mine?
Oh Oh Oh Oh I

Son, don't ask
Neither half full or empty is the glass
Cling to the mast
Spend your whole life living in the past
Going nowhere fast

So he wrote it on a wall
The hollowest of halos
Is no halo at all
Televisions selling plastic figurines of leaders
Saying nothing at all
And you chime
Stars in heaven align
Ohhhhhhhh I

Son, don't ask
Neither half full or empty is the glass
Cling to the mast
Spend your whole life living in the past
Going nowhere fast

What are we drinking when we’re done?
Glasses of water

What A Night!

Oh my God... The Coldplay concert was unbelievable. UNBELIEVABLE. This is the only band I think, that sounds so much better LIVE than on their albums, just cos of the crowd interaction, plus the energy that they put into their performances. Totally worth the $188. The only sad part about their performance I felt was that they didn't do "Amsterdam" =\ sigh but apart from that it was fabulous. Chris Martin, John Buckland, Guy Berryman and Will Champion are geniuses, I tell you, pure God-like geniuses.

That wasn't the only fantastic bit of the night. I went for the Naturally 7 concert yesterday for the Mosaic Music Festival, which totally blew my mind, and today, just before the Coldplay concert started, Sumi and I were talking about how ripped Jamal (the high voice/electric guitar in my previous post's video) was, I spotted this totally ripped African-American dude walking a flight of stairs below us and pointed him out to Sumi, saying "you mean something like him" or something along those lines... Then we both took a closer look and OMGZWTFBBQ it was NATURALLY 7 AT THE COLDPLAY CONCERT!!! No one seemed to recognize them (a cappella doesn't enjoy such a huge fan base in Singapore =\) and they were just walking freely, and they sat at the block below us! We were like at block T13, they were at A13.

So after the epic concert ended, Sumi and I hung back (making Perry, Diana and Aw Yong wait for us haha) to look for them, when most of the stadium cleared, we spotted them hanging around the area that they were sitting, and we approached them to take a photo!

From left to right: Me, Roger, Garfield, Sumi, Armand (the sexy bass), Rod

Dwight, Jamal and Warren were somewhere else. I was so excited, that my legs turned to jelly man. So cool! I'm so happy I had the guts to go up and speak to them. Many thanks to Aw Yong, who took this photo with her digital camera, then sent it to me :)

What a night! Possibly the greatest night of my life. If I were to die any second now, I'd die a happy man.

A Cappella

You know, if you ever asked me if I'd rather sing solo in a band or sing bass in an a cappella group, I'd choose the former most of the time.

But it's times like last night at the Naturally 7 concert and whenever I hear epic a cappella songs like this one that remind me of my roots... The bass is like how sexy la. OMG

Coldplay Week: Final Post - Yellow

Heh I missed the 1 day to Coldplay post cos I was at the Naturally 7 concert for mosaic today... Really blew my mind man. If I could perform to like 5% of the bass' level today, I'd be damn happy with myself.

17 hours to COLDPLAY: THE VIVA LA VIDA TOUR

On this final post of Coldplay week, I share with you where it all began for me. "Shiver" was the very first single produced by Coldplay (and subsequently is on the Guitar Hero World Tour song list lol), but "Yellow" was the first ever song I heard by them. "Don't Panic" made me more interested in them, but "Yellow" was the song that let me know about their existence first... So for me, effectively it's been the song I most associate with Coldplay... Enjoy.

"Yellow" by Coldplay

Look at the stars,
Look how they shine for you,
And everything you do,
Yeah they were all yellow

I came along
I wrote a song for you
And all the things you do
And it was called yellow

So then I took my turn
Oh what a thing to have done
And it was all yellow

Your skin
Oh yeah your skin and bones
Turn into something beautiful
You know you know I love you so
You know I love you so

I swam across
I jumped across for you
Oh what a thing to do
Cause you were all yellow

I drew a line
I drew a line for you
Oh what a thing to do
And it was all yellow

Your skin
Oh yeah your skin and bones
Turn into something beautiful
You know for you I'd bleed myself dry
For you I'd bleed myself dry

It's true look how they shine for you
Look how they shine for you
Look how they shine for...
Look how they shine for you
Look how they shine for you
Look how they shine

Look at the stars look how they shine for you
And all the things that you do.

Coldplay Week: Day 6 - Til Kingdom Come

2 more days to COLDPLAY: THE VIVA LA VIDA TOUR

Azi's favourite song :) I realized that the way Coldplay does their albums, they have excellent singles that catch the ear immediately after you hear them that make you want to get the album and listen more; and you know how some singers have their best songs made into singles so that they can sell albums, but the rest of the songs on that album are crap? Well for Coldplay, after you get their album by recommendation of the single that you heard on the radio for the first time, you are never disappointed cos while their singles are great, attention-catching songs, the other songs are soulful, meaningful and beautiful. Some of them are hidden gems within the album, like this track, off X&Y. It's the last track of the album after "Twisted Logic", not printed on the back of the album, but listed as a track on the stereo.

Dedicated to all those people who are waiting for their boyfriends in NS, waiting for their loved ones to come back from overseas studies, for those who pine away at home thinking about their loved one they don't dare to approach etc.. This song is for you.

"Til Kingdom Come" by Coldplay

Still my heart and hold my tongue
I feel my time, my time has come
Let me in, unlock the door
I've never felt this way before

And the wheels just keep on turning
The drummer begins to drum
I don't know which way I'm going
I don't know which way I've come

Hold my head inside your hands
I need someone who understands
I need someone, someone who hears
For you, I've waited all these years

For you I'd wait 'til kingdom come
Until my day, my day is done
And say you'll come and set me free
Just say you'll wait, you'll wait for me

In your tears and in your blood
In your fire and in your flood
I hear you laugh, I heard you sing
I wouldn't change a single thing

And the wheels just keep on turning
The drummers begin to drum
I don't know which way I'm going
I don't know what I'll become

For you I'd wait 'til kingdom come
Until my days, my days are done
And say you'll come and set me free
Just say you'll wait, you'll wait for me.

Just say you'll wait, you'll wait for me.
Just say you'll wait, you'll wait for me.

Coldplay Week: Day 5 - The Scientist

3 more days to COLDPLAY: THE VIVA LA VIDA TOUR

"The Scientist" is great in so many ways, the tune is great, the mood is sombre and perfect, the lyrics are amazing, and the video is just fantastic. I would label this as one of Coldplay's greatest songs. Did you know that to film the video, Chris Martin had to learn how to sing this song backwards? They filmed everything normally, then played it in reverse. That's how Chris appears to be singing the song the right way even when everything is going in reverse. Like Squidward once said in a Spongebob episode, "Art is suffering". That's dedication for you man. Still have no idea why it's called "The Scientist" though.

"The Scientist" by Coldplay

Come up to meet you, tell you I'm sorry
You don't know how lovely you are
I had to find you, tell you I need you
And tell you I set you apart
Tell me your secrets, and ask me your questions
Oh let's go back to the start
Running in circles, coming in tails
Heads on a science apart

Nobody said it was easy
It's such a shame for us to part
Nobody said it was easy
No one ever said it would be this hard
Oh take me back to the start

I was just guessing at numbers and figures
Pulling your puzzles apart
Questions of science, science and progress
Do not speak as loud as my heart
And tell me you love me, come back and haunt me
Oh and I rush to the start
Running in circles, chasing tails
Coming back as we are

Nobody said it was easy
Oh it's such a shame for us to part
Nobody said it was easy
No one ever said it would be so hard
I'm going back to the start

Coldplay Week: Day 4 - Viva La Vida

4 more days to COLDPLAY: THE VIVA LA VIDA TOUR

Today I share with you the title of the album, the title of the tour: Viva La Vida. After a three year hiatus following the success of X&Y, Coldplay came back with a bang in 2008 with Viva La Vida, an album with such a huge change in music direction that you'd almost be forgiven if you could not identify them as Coldplay (Chris Martin's voice is ever-revealing though haha). It's arguable that this is the most catchy song in the whole album, with the meaning of the lyrics most debated among Coldplay's following. The album itself is a breath of fresh air where Coldplay is concerned, involving many new instruments and different music styles. (I lol-ed at the video at 3:19, where Chris Martin was mirroring the movements of Will Champion.)

"Viva La Vida" by Coldplay

I used to rule the world
Seas would rise when I gave the word
Now in the morning I sleep alone
Sweep the streets I used to own

I used to roll the dice
Feel the fear in my enemy's eyes
Listen as the crowd would sing
"Now the old king is dead! Long live the king!"

One minute I held the key
Next the walls were closed on me
And I discovered that my castles stand
Upon pillars of salt and pillars of sand

I hear Jerusalem bells a-ringing
Roman Cavalry choirs are singing
Be my mirror, my sword and shield
My missionaries in a foreign field

For some reason I can't explain
Once you go there was never
Never an honest word
And that was when I ruled the world

It was the wicked and wild wind
Blew down the doors to let me in
Shattered windows and the sound of drums
People couldn't believe what I'd become

Revolutionaries wait
For my head on a silver plate
Just a puppet on a lonely string
Oh who would ever want to be king?

I hear Jerusalem bells a ringing
Roman Cavalry choirs are singing
Be my mirror, my sword and shield
My missionaries in a foreign field

For some reason I can't explain
I know Saint Peter won't call my name
Never an honest word
But that was when I ruled the world

I hear Jerusalem bells a ringing
Roman Cavalry choirs are singing
Be my mirror, my sword and shield
My missionaries in a foreign field

For some reason I can't explain
I know Saint Peter won't call my name
Never an honest word
But that was when I ruled the world.

A New Low

When you read something over and over again but can't seem to get it into that thick skull of yours.

When you spend 12 hours a day mugging endlessly, looking at how many pages you have left for this chapter to finish, looking at how many sets of notes/chapters you have left before you can say you're done.

When you try to recall what you have mugged 24 hours ago but can't remember about half of it.

When you close your eyes to test your memory, or to take a short break, and wake up 45 minutes later, 45 minutes lost to your carelessness.

When you tell yourself you must get up on the dot at 0730 to start mugging the next morning, but can't bear to drag yourself out of bed, dreading the long ordeal that awaits you that day.

When you opened your mail this morning.

It's moments like these that make you feel like crying.

But life is not without its challenges, and even though some days you feel like giving up, exiting the rat race just for a while, you know you cannot.

You know that no matter how bad it gets, you will do your best to survive, and even if you don't, you know you did your best. Even if your best is not good enough, you still did your best.

And it's moments like these, that you can lift your head up high and be proud.

So don't give up. Strive on, no matter how hopeless it seems, no matter how many times you wished you could've started earlier. Strive on - and be proud.

Coldplay Week: Day 3 - Fix You

5 days to COLDPLAY: THE VIVA LA VIDA TOUR

Oh well, no matter what happens, nothing can dampen my spirit for the upcoming Coldplay concert :)

Today I share arguably the best song out of X&Y, "Fix You". To me, compared to the other albums that Coldplay came up with, X&Y wasn't as impactful, although it did continue their trend of bringing a different sound to each album. "Fix You" is one of the more soulful songs of the album, and the lyrics are just golden. They say every Coldplay song will bring you something different, and this one doesn't disappoint. Definitely a song to listen to when you're feeling down on your luck and shitty. I love the part in the video when he swings that light globe around many times before hurling it out into the audience, and when the whole crowd joins in the last few lines, can bring tears to your eyes. Brilliant.

"Fix You" by Coldplay

When you try your best, but you don't succeed
When you get what you want, but not what you need
When you feel so tired, but you can't sleep
Stuck in reverse

And the tears come streaming down your face
When you lose something you can't replace
When you love someone but it goes to waste
Could it be worse?

Lights will guide you home
And ignite your bones
And I will try to fix you

High up above or down below
When you're too in love to let it go
But if you never try you'll never know
Just what you're worth

Lights will guide you home
And ignite your bones
And I will try to fix you

Tears stream down your face
When you lose something you cannot replace
Tears stream down your face
And I

Tears stream down your face
I promise you I will learn from my mistakes
Tears stream down your face
And I

Lights will guide you home
And ignite your bones
And I will try to fix you.

Coldplay Week Day 2 - Don't Panic

6 days to COLDPLAY: THE VIVA LA VIDA TOUR

Today I'll share the reason I got into Coldplay in the first place: It's not the single, "Yellow", that first caught my attention, though it's a great song nevertheless! I first saw the video for "Don't Panic" on MTV and it immediately caught my attention. The love affair with Coldplay has continued since...

I like the video a lot, fit the title and the song very well in my opinion... Their whole world is crashing and sinking and they're in a flood with volcanoes erupting around them but he's going "we live in a beautiful world... yeah we do yeah we do" and it's incredibly chillax, the way the song goes and the way they are portrayed in the video.

"Don't Panic" by Coldplay

Bones, sinking like stones
All that we fought for
Homes, places we've grown
All of us are done for

We live in a beautiful world
Yeah we do, yeah we do
We live in a beautiful world

Bones, sinking like stones
All that we've fought for
Homes, places we've grown
All of us are done for

We live in a beautiful world
Yeah we do, yeah we do
We live in a beautiful world

We live in a beautiful world
Yeah we do, yeah we do
We live in a beautiful world

Oh all that I know there's nothing here to run from
Cause yeah everybody here's got somebody to lean on.

Coldplay Week: Day 1 - Amsterdam

7 days to COLDPLAY: THE VIVA LA VIDA TOUR

I declare this week Coldplay week on my blog, in lieu of their upcoming concert in Singapore this coming Monday. Each day I will share one of my favourite Coldplay songs with you and the reasons for it being so :)

I kick off the countdown with my favourite Coldplay song ever - "Amsterdam", from their album A Rush Of Blood To The Head. This rendition is my favourite, from their Coldplay Live 2003 album.

This song is just so... emotional. Chris Martin opens it with the piano and takes the song all the way to the last bit with just his singing and piano-playing. The last moment of the song is really, truly a climax in every sense of the word with the whole band coming in to support Chris Martin as he goes "you came along and you cut me loose" right at the end... then everything dies down... and the song ends as it began, with the piano and the singer (and a little bass, but you get the idea).

The lyrics are beautiful as well. I have dreams of performing this for my wife at our wedding lol. Pity that getting married looks more and more impossible with each passing day.

"Amsterdam" by Coldplay

Come on, oh my star is fading
And I swerve out of control
If I, if I'd only waited
I'd not be stuck here in this hole

Come here, oh my star is fading
And I swerve out of control
And I swear I waited and waited
I've got to get out of this hole

But time is on your side
It's on your side now
Not pushing you down and all around
It's no cause for concern

Come on, oh my star is fading
And I see no chance of release
And I know I'm dead on the surface
But I am screaming underneath

And time is on your side
It's on your side now
Not pushing you down and all around
No it's no cause for concern

Stuck on the end of this ball and chain
And I'm on my way back down again
Stood on a bridge, tied to a noose
Sick to the stomach
You can say what you mean
But it won't change a thing
I'm sick of the secrets
Stood on the edge, tied to a noose
You came along and you cut me loose
You came along and you cut me loose
You came along and you cut me loose.

Before & After

Let's see, before the first leg of the Liverpool vs Real Madrid Round of 16 Champions League qualifiers, Pepe (Centre Back for Real Madrid) had this to say about coming up against Torres (Striker for Liverpool):
________________________________________________________________________________________

"I love going face-to-face with a big powerful striker like Torres because I'm made to go clattering into challenges and there's nothing I enjoy better than massive physical battles.

''We are both strong but I have a big advantage in that he's got to play with the ball and I don't. The bigger, stronger and better my opponent the more I like the clash.

''Football's a contact sport and strikers often give defenders like me a right good kicking off the ball and nobody says anything because we centre-halves are tough. But as long as I go for the ball and not the man, then there's nothing better than using all the time I've spent in the gym to crash into bodies."
________________________________________________________________________________________

After Madrid were thrashed 5-0 on aggregate last night, Pepe had this to say about coming up against Torres:
________________________________________________________________________________________

"I think the referee should have blown for a foul in the first goal from Torres.

"The match changed course from that moment. I was the last player and felt I was pushed."
________________________________________________________________________________________

Those who watched the highlights, and paid close attention to how Pepe dealt with the situation that was presented to him, would have noticed that he was ALREADY falling when he tried to poke the ball away with the outside of his right boot. He decided to go crashing to the ground very theatrically, even bouncing the back of his head off the pitch, cos Torres had a hand on his shoulder. Then he cried foul.

Those who watched the whole match, would have noticed that Pepe spent most of it diving and falling at the slightest contact, trying to get Liverpool players yellow-carded, and he did, to Mascherano, who is now banned for the next leg. Talk about your dirty players.

Those who watched the whole match ALSO would have noticed that NOTHING changed course after the first goal. Liverpool were dominating the whole game from start to end and if not for Casillas and his world-class saves, they would have been 3-0 up even before the first goal. So suck it up, Pepe. You should get yourself checked, maybe you hurt your brain from your enormously theatrical fall.

So much for enjoying "massive physical battles". Stop making excuses Pepe, I knew you were a rubbish defender from watching you at Euro 2008, and these two matches have only served to further reinforce my stand. Only God knows how the heck you are in the first team for teams like Real Madrid and Portugal. What a crybaby.

Life In Technicolor II

Last night, was probably the happiest 2 hours of my life so far.

I know, it's pathetic right? But it's true.

________________________________________________________________________________

I caught this video on MTV while waiting for the Liverpool vs Real Madrid match to start last night, didn't think it was much until I flipped back again and thought that the puppet looked a hell lot like Chris Martin! Then I heard the sitar issit? I think it's a sitar riff, haha, or a sitar-sounding riff, and I was OMG it's Life In Technicolor II from the Prospekt's March Edition of Viva La Vida!!! I just got the album yesterday, haven't listened to it yet, but if you've listened to Life In Technicolor from the original Viva La Vida, this one will give you goosebumps man.

"Life In Technicolor II" by Coldplay

There's a wild wind blowing
Down the corner of my street
Every night there the headlights are glowing

There's a cold war coming
On the radio I heard
Baby it's a violent world

Oh love don't let me go
Won't you take me where the streetlights glow
I could hear it coming
I could hear the sirens sound
Now my feet won't touch the ground

Time came a-creepin'
Oh and time's a loaded gun
Every road is a ray of light
It goes o-o-on
Time only can lead you on
Still it's such a beautiful night

Oh love don't let me go
Won't you take me where the streetlights glow
I could hear it coming
Like a serenade of sound
Now my feet won't touch the ground

Gravity release me
And don't ever hold me down
Now my feet won't touch the ground.

Did it send shivers down your spine? It did for me, especially when he goes "I could hear it coming... now my feet won't touch the ground" in each chorus, and the last bit that is identical to the original "Life In Technicolor", where the whole band goes "Ooohhh!". Fabulous I tell you. I don't regret buying this CD, even though I haven't listened to it yet!

[edit]: I just discovered that the Prospekt's March EP was released in December 2008... Shows you how long I've been living under a rock -.-

Partnerships

I think one of my favourite parts of playing football is forging profitable partnerships with my teammates. It makes the game much more enjoyable knowing that you have an almost psychic connection with at least one player out there on your team.

I used to have a good connection with Alex until he tore his knee ligaments and stopped playing football for the forseeable future, currently in the medicine team I share a good understanding with Jipson whenever we two play together, and even less so with Samuel, who does most of the instructing to me when we play on the left flank.

Most recently during weekly football at RI on Saturday, I played with Malik, or Manik, didn't quite catch which letter it was, in the same team for once. His play reminds me of Cristiano Ronaldo, needless to say he was the go-to guy whenever we started attacks. It was a real joy playing football with him on my side cos we could find each other really well and with him as the left-winger and me as the striker, we reaped about 3 goals or more and carved out many other chances with Wilson in the picture several times as well.

Some people find great joy in football going on blazing, unstoppable runs, some find that in scoring tons of goals, some get the same feeling by assisting others, or even producing a fabulous tackle, or making unbelievable saves. I think forging great partnerships with players ranks right up there with the rest of them.

Monsoon

"Monsoon" by Tokio Hotel

I'm staring at a broken door
There's nothing left here anymore
My room is cold
It's making me insane

I've been waiting here so long
Another the moment seems to've come,
I see the dark clouds coming up again.

Running through the monsoon
Beyond the world,
To the end of time,
Where the rain won't hurt
Fighting the storm,
Into the blue,
And when I lose myself I think of you,
Together we'll be running somewhere new
Through the monsoon.
Just me and you

A half moon's fading from my sight
I see your vision in its light
But now it's gone and left me so alone
I know I have to find you now
Can hear your name, I don't know how
Why can't we make this darkness feel like home?

Running through the monsoon
Beyond the world
To the end of time
Where the rain won't hurt
Fighting the storm
Into the blue
And when I lose myself I think of you
Together we'll be running somewhere new
And nothing can hold me back from you
Through the monsoon

Hey! Hey!

I'm fighting all this power
Coming in my way
Let it take me straight to you
I'll be running night and day
I'll be with you soon
Just me and you
We'll be there soon
So soon

Running through the monsoon
Beyond the world
To the end of time
Where the rain won't hurt
Fighting the storm
Into the blue
And when I lose myself I think of you
Together we'll be running somewhere new
And nothing can hold me back from you
Through the monsoon

Through the monsoon
Just me and you
Through the monsoon
Just me and you
